SONICS: Mocking the Sonics Picks

Mocking the Sonics Picks
June 8, 2004

SUPERSONICS.COM has scoured the internet to find the latest mock drafts from various NBA experts. With slightly more than two weeks left until the draft, most people have the Sonics going for a center, but there are a few holdouts who see them going best player available with a guard like Arizona's Andre Iguodala or Nevada's Kirk Snyder. The most popular single player is BYU center Rafael Araujo, and the two two-round mocks don't seem to know which picks the Sonics have.

Andriuskevicius
Gregg Doyel, CBSSportsline.com (6/7)
12. Martynas Andriuskevicius, C, Lithuania

comment: The Sonics seem destined to draft a foreign center none of us had heard of before last month.

Tony Mejia, CBSSportsline.com (5/27)
12. Andre Iguodala, G/F, Arizona

comment: The best player remaining on the board, this choice would intensify efforts to move either Ray Allen or Ronald Murray for a quality big man.

Araujo
Dime Magazine (Jun. 4)
12. Rafael Araujo, C, BYU

comment: If the Sonics don't take a big man, they're insane. They've got enough perimeter shooters for two NBA teams, let alone one in Seattle. Araujo is very strong, and he reportedly pounded Colorado center David Harrison in private workouts. Is he good enough to be a lottery pick? Maybe not, but the Sonics need a mature center in the worst way.

Snyder
DraftCity.com (Jun. 5)
12. Kirk Snyder, G/F, Nevada
36. Lawrence Roberts, PF, Mississippi State
42. Damir Omerhodzic, F, Bosnia

HoopsHype.com (Jun. 7)
12. Kosta Perovic, C, Serbia-Montenegro

comment: Has size, talent and the willingness to keep improving. Very unselfish. Some more pounds wouldn't hurt. Comparison: Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Steve Kyler Hoopsworld.com (Jun. 6)
12. Rafael Araujo, C, BYU

Iguodala
NBADraft.net (May 27)
12. Andre Iguodala, G/F, Arizona
36. Lawrence Roberts, PF, Mississippi State
42. Blake Stepp, PG, Gonzaga

Sean Deveney, Sporting News
12. Rafael Araujo, C, BYU

comment: He has improved steadily. His ability to defend the paint will determine how high he goes.
